Somalia in cammino: sostegno alle eccellenze socio-sanitarie in pediatria e salute mentale - AID 11514

The 642 project focused on 3 main points:

  • Outreach – Facilitating access to healthcare for the weakest sections of the population, in particular for displaced persons, by reducing perinatal mortality in general
  • Training & Telemedicine Implementation of specialist medical and nursing training modules
  • Set-Up – Operating Room of the MAS CTH in Hargeisa.

1 - Outreach

4,212 children in IDP camps accessed free medical care:

  • 504 the first year
  • 1,311 the second year
  • 2,397 in the third year

With an increase in planned clinical activities of + 234%.

From the second year on, a dedicated application was created for the management and monitoring of all outreach data. This has greatly improved Terre Solidali’s ability to understand the progress of clinical activities, in all indicators (and others have been added)

  • Resume Total Diagnosis
  • Resume Diagnosis for Camp
  • Resume for Disease Type
  • Resume Drugs
  • Resume Drugs for Disease
  • Resume Users for Age

Training & Telemedicine

The training was initially designed to be only “in presence”, but the Covid-19 Pandemic has made this method of carrying out very difficult.
As problem solving Terre Solidali has implemented the development of a platform for telemedicine both at Mas Children in Hargeisa and at Jowhar Hospital near Mogadishu. Given the considerable advantages and the ability to manage even a very large number of trainees, the platform has become one of the strengths of Terre Solidali’s telemedicine.
To see the method in detail, you can go to this link: Telemedicine and Teleconsultation

In general, the appreciation for this new interactive mode has been very high.
In addition to the training modules for doctors, a 6-lesson nursing module was also implemented in 2021-2022.
This module, organized with the Regina Margherita Children’s Hospital in Turin (one of the largest in Italy) received great honors at an important National Medical Congress, attended by the Italian medical excellence. Title “On the side of the children. New challenges in emergency pediatrics”: out of over 180 submitted projects, ours came first and won. Liked the project, but also the method, the objectives, the
monitoring, and the empathy that was created with the Somali staff.

Operating Room

Terre Solidali took care of the 1st Phase of the restoration of the important MAS Children’s operating room.

In particular, we proceeded with the design and purchase of a complete air conditioning and air treatment system, with optional filters and flooring according to international standards.

To make assembly easier, especially of the air flow, video tutorials have also been provided, made by the canalist, to cover each step of the implementation (assembly, joining, assembling, cutting, etc.). The videos were made in Italian with English subtitles.
